LUSAKA INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Sport in Secondary

Physical Education and Games at Lusaka International Community School plays an integral part of school life. All students are provided with opportunities to participate at some level. Involvement in sport and physical activities are seen to be important in creating team spirit, positive relationships and pride in individual and team achievements beyond the classroom.

LICS key sports for Secondary are as follows: Football, Netball, Hockey, Swimming, Basketball, Tennis and Golf. Each key sport involves a considerable commitment of two or three practices a week plus matches and tournaments. Academic PE is offered at IGCSE level and students achieve good results in this subject.

The Head of Sport is supported by a Physical Education department consisting of a further three full time PE teachers, one Pre-Primary Assistant, one Primary Sports Assistant and an administrative assistant. A number of academic staff are also widely involved in the delivery of activity sessions, and the extensive extra-curricular programme on offer. In addition LICS employs a range of regional and national sports coaches to complement the existing coaching talent within the department.

The school’s sports facilities include one Hockey/Football field, an all-weather Hockey pitch (floodlit) a 25m swimming pool and 10m learning pool, one basketball court and an indoor sports hall. Construction of a new indoor sports complex will commence in 2016.

The broad nature of the curriculum offered, particularly as students’ progress to the upper age groups, is a real strength of the department. The aim of the physical education programme is for students to acquire the fundamental movement patterns that will remain with the student throughout their adult lives.

The extensive Inter-House programme offers further competitive matches for almost every student in the school. All students are encouraged to participate at a level appropriate to them. Those who want to be involved beyond the competitive route can enjoy recreational levels of activity to maintain healthy lifestyles within the school.

The school organizes a number of trips and sports tours during the school year and in the holidays.
