At LICS, Early Years Education begins in the EYD and caters for children between the ages of one and four years. The EYD has three spacious classrooms and several play/work rooms including a safe kitchen, where children cook once a week, and a computer room and library. The EYD has an excellent adult-child ratio and this ensures that special care is given to the learning needs of each individual child. The staff is dedicated to providing a learning environment that develops the whole child socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively. The EYD is well equipped and set in a well secured area where children are able to learn and explore in safety. Specialist teachers from the Primary School lead the children in Physical Education, Music, French and Swimming. Staff from the school’s Learning Support Department support children with special educational needs (see the philosophy section for more details). Learners in the EYD are grouped according to age and placed in three groups (Green - infant/ toddler, Blue - play group, Red and Yellow - pre-school). Each group has a set syllabus with aims and objectives adapted from the British QCA 2000 Curriculum Guidance Document for the Foundation Stage. The document identifies early learning goals which are the expected objectives for most children to reach by the end of the Foundation Stage. Guidance is given in six learning areas for effective planning, assessment and teaching which in turn prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2). The EYD at LICS also places great importance on parental involvement in a young child's learning. To this end an active 'Parents as Partners' programme has been established to provide educational workshops, talks, social events and opportunities for parents to work and provide activities for children during the normal school day.
